I know it depends what kind of job, but in general do piercings/tattoos usually discourage employers from hiring you?
Okay, thanks for the answers, I wanted some other opinions. Although I disagree with the fact that tattoos & piercings just mean you don't care about your image, or make you look "disgusting and gross", I get that they can portray a negative image to someone who would be potentially hiring you. Thanks again for the answers.

I think it could, depending on the job. Thats why you just cover them

June 25, 2009

yes it shows that you don’t really care about your image and that your not very serious

yes i think so – they want someone responsble and not crazy!! i think tatoos and peicings portray that style =)

Well some people find them distracting and gross. If u want to go in the army, tattoos will be like a mark that people can identify u by, and the army won`t let u in unless u remove it. I don`t think it`s fair for people to reject u if u have tattoos though. I don`t have any.

yes they usually do. it send off a bad connotation to people and many times jobs deal with clients and in those situation appearance is very important.

when i got my lip piercing my friend joked that i could only work at hottopic or journeys. i would kind of have to agree. i mean now i work in an office for my dad, but i digress.

it does affect your opportunities.

idk. like if you wanna work at like a prep school er a high advanced job, then you probably dont wanna have any big inapropriate ugly tatoos. but if you wanna work at like a bar, they realy wont’ care if you have tatoos cuz that just doesn’t really matter to them.

hottinpink9021 @ 6:58 pm #

Well I have a small nose peircing and everytime I go to an interview, the last thing they tell me before they hire me is that I can not wear my nose peircing. Also I’ve worked places that you must cover up all your tattoos before work…But as far as most jobs go, I think they will hire you, just so long as your not covered in tattoos and peircings, and you are able to take them out/cover them up.

I think they would limit your job choices quite a bit. They hinder your chances of doing anything involving interacting with the public. Piercings don’t look sanitary, so food service is eliminated.

Maybe you can get a job in a music store or something.

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!! And don’t let anyone tell you differently. I have no piercings and no tatoos, but I know that people with visible tatoos and excessive, visible piercings are discrimitated against.

If it is corporate situation, school, or even a bank or some kind of high class business, it will weigh heavily on your chances. If you own your own business are even are doing hair, it might not hurt you that bad depending on what it is. A small nose stud or something like that won’t hurt you that much. A tattoo on your neck will.

Like you said, it depends on the job and really only a few jobs seem okay with visible tattoos or piercings. For example at the store Hot Topic which if you don’t know is kind of goth/punk/whatever and encourage employees to look the part. That’s okay for them, but say the Gap or Lenscrafters isn’t going to want employees that will probably scare away their customers. In general, I’d say it does not help employment opportunity.

it really depends on what types of piercings or how much of the tattoo is showing.. now if its a simple little nose ring or a small labret piercing i’d say it wont affect it, i have a pierced nose and nobody even notices it… i never had any problems finding a job and i’m an xray tech.. now if you have a face full of metal or visible tattoos all over your arms or face or even neck, then sure, people will look down on you for it and probably hire someone else.. of course it also depends on the person doing the interviewing, and also the type of job you are looking for.. good luck!

Yes, I think it does. If you are going to become an auto mechanic, then no it probably doesn’t matter so much. If you are looking to become a doctor or even an office executive…yes, it matters. You personal appearance is the first thing people see; you must make a good, clean impression of yourself before you get the job. Once you get the job, you may find the company is very lax with those types of things, but don’t take it for granted that people will accept it because more than likely they won’t.

Yes. Many people judge people on their body piercings and/or tattoos. They think that because a person has any of these they might not be as reliable or a good worker as someone who doesn’t. Personally, I dont believe it really matters, but some do believe that it does. If you think that someone did not hire you because of your apperence or anything else, then it was probably good they didnt because you wouldn’t want to work for them anyways.

It really depends… I’m going into a paralegal career and it’s pretty staunch. I’m getting a tattoo soon but I’m making sure to get it where it can be hidden by clothing. Everyone is different but be sure to do your research before applying for a job if you have a visible tattoo or piercing. I wanted a nose ring as well but seeing as I really want a job in my field I figure not getting a hole in my nose is a small sacrifice to make. :) You can contact the company’s HR department and ask what their policies are for piercings and tattoos. They’re there to help and will tell it to you straight.

If you have an excessive amount of piercings/tattoos that are visible, then they tend to look down on that but most jobs really don’t mind nowadays. my aunt works in an office building and has multiple piercings and tattoos

Laura @ 5:20 am #

Sadly they do. How old would you say are in charge of hiring people for most jobs? Older then me, and I’m no spring chicken. I wish people were open minded enough to judge people strictly on there talents and abilities, but that is just not the way things work.

Really it isn’t that hard to believe, would someone with a glowing resume who showed up at the interview dirty and poorly dressed get the job?

Bottom line: appearance does matter.

i think when u have alot of visible tattoos yes of course…i have a tattoo on my wrist….I cover it with jewelry when necessary..I would have a lot more but I am 21 and not settled in a job which would permit it. Jobs that are service oriented really tend to look down at tats and piercings. My mom worked for a catering company who would not hire ppl who had visible tattoos or piercings.

M.S.C. @ 9:59 pm #

I think it does. Especially if you are in a professional, business environment. If you are going to get a tattoo, I suggest it’s in a discreet area that can easily be hidden. As far as piercing goes, anything other than earlobes is unacceptable in the workplace.

I work in a VERY professional environment and have 3 tattoos: 2 on my lower back, one on my hip. And my belly is pierced. No one at my company nor clients would ever know unless I told them.

Yes, I think if a person with piercings and tattoos and someone else of the same qualifications without the piercings and tattoos both interviewed for the same job, the person without piercings/tattoos would be more likely to get the job.

They certainly do- and I think that’s one of the reasons why some people have them on uncovered areas of their bodies- to show that they don’t care about jobs.

Think of it this way- when you see people with lots of tattoos et al working, what are they doing? They work the counters at coffee shops, music stores, theatres, clothing stores. I honestly don’t mind it- but just be prepared for few opportunities for career advancement.

Yes, they do.

Yes. Many employers that own respectable places aren’t going to hire people with visible piercings and tattoos.

In my position I interview potential employees. What I look for is honestly reliability, integrity, schooling. work history and experience. I do not ask if they have any tattoos nor do I ask them about any that are visible. I am covered in tattoos but if I have a long sleeve shirt on and pants you would never ever know that I am tattooed and continue to get tattooed until I am a little old lady in a nursing home. I am in the insurance industry and for the most part we do not spend a lot a face to face time with the customers. We do have potential customers that do come in the office and speak with us. I was a nurse for over 5 years and never had an issue when it came to getting a job.

So I guess what I am trying to say here is that NO tattoos would not discourage me from hiring someone. Lack of experience, no education, work history (such as short time on the job, history of being fired and etc) would discourage me from hiring someone.

I work for a world wide Corporate Graphics company, and we do work for Boeing, Disneyland, and ECT….I have a sleeve and chest piece and I work with the VP’s and with 132 of our most important customers. My tattoos have never been a problem here, and I think there is maybe one other person out of the 300 that work in just my building with tattoos. It depends on the company. And tattoos are not gross or trashy…people are so stupid and ignorant.

fishefood @ 5:37 am #

tattoos have been around for THOUSANDS of freakin years people….get a fuc%ing life if they offend you.i have peircings dreadlocks and tattos and i have a great job making lots of money!!!jobs shouldnt dictate how you express yourself.dont let corporate lame *** uptight shallow superficial jobs make your decision.they are not grose.who wants to work for someone whos that uptight and will stereotype you that quickly anyway?????

When I moved to London UK and started applying for jobs, I noticed a lot of companies stated “no ****** piercings” in their job adverts, so I guess if it is a corporate position you are looking for then I’d say having anything visible COULD affect your chances of getting a job. I have tattoos but not visible ones.
