Bead Bracelets: A History

0

Throughout history, beads and bead bracelets have played a surprisingly considerable role in society. I know what you're thinking: the jewelry of choice for teenage girls actually matters. Well, sit back, relax, and listen to this thrilling tale on the history of bead bracelets and what it meant.

Some of the earliest signs of jewelry had come out of Africa, around 75,000 years ago in the form of bead bracelets made from bored out ostrich egg shells (I wish I had one!). The earliest evidence of an authorized jewelry making stage emerged in Ancient Egypt between 5,000 and 3,000 years ago, and these people had also discovered the ease of turning gold into pretty much anything they wanted, whether it be jewelry, religious items, or tools. This is the first time in history that human beings had appropriated gold as a source for jewelry making, and since than it has stuck as how even to this day gold is seen as a precious metal even though gold has strictly limited industrial use.

More essentially however in history is that a myriad of beads were used in a more spiritual sense. The word "bead" itself is collected from the Middle English word "bede" which, actually means "prayer." These beads that were used in ancient times were prayer beads, and even in today's society there are a wide range prayer beads. Both Roman Catholics and Buddhists use rosary beads to pray, despite coming from widely distinct regions.

Native North American tribes were are also known for their traditional bead work, for dressing up in all kinds of beads, and would put beads on a myriad of of their antiquity including their cloths and bags, and their animal skin tunics. Throughout much of history, jewelry was seen as a applicable form of money as well. There hasn't been a accredited paper routine until recent memory so our ancestors had to turn to jewelry and other exchange agents to supply themselves with food, water, and gear needed to survive. Today we have the Dollar, and Euro and other forms of currency, but back then there wasn't this sense of security in paper money.

It's important to note the historical necessity for beads, bead bracelets, and jewelry in general. These attributes have played important roles in the history of humanity, and will never be taken away from us. Countless centuries have passed since the first piece of jewelry was carved out of some rock, and since then humanity has moved forward with impressive speed and dedication to looking our best.
